Baseball Drops Twinbill At Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team found itself on the wrong side of a twinbill sweep, dropping a pair at Whitworth on Sunday. The Blues dropped the opener and Northwest Conference contest 6-5 and fell in game two 16-5.

Game 1
The final game of the NWC portion of the series proved to be an exciting one. The contest saw three lead changes which included Nate Korahais' first career homerun, a two-run blast in the fifth inning to put the Blues on top 5-4. The Bucs would pull out the win however, tying the game in the fifth then taking the lead for good after a solo homer by Doughty in the sixth.

Mateus Conaway allowed six runs in four and one-third innings of work but did not factor in the decision. Russell Petersen (3-2) was tagged with the loss despite working a solid three and two-thirds innings of relief. He surrendered only three hits with his lone run coming from Doughty's roundtripper.

Williams tossed four complete innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and VanCise came on to pick up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.

VanCise's save effort was not without its shaky moments however as the Blues loaded the bases in the top of the ninth. He entered the game with one runner on and later found himself facing Jack Bickerton with two runners in scoring position and no one out. Bickerton would be the first casualty though as VanCise struck out three consecutive hitters to seal the win for the Bucs.

Beck Maguire had two hits including a homerun, two runs and two RBI with Nathan Wilson adding three hits and a run scored for the Blues.

Game 2
The series finale saw Whitworth score 13 runs in the second inning and win by a large margin. Rylan Burigsay suffered the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in one inning-plus of work.

The Bucs batted the order in the second which saw Morrison double twice and drive home a combined five runs. The inning also saw a pair of homeruns, first a two-run blast from Guisti then later a grand slam from Shipman.

The Blues did see a pair of long ball hits of their own. Wilson continued his solid day at the plate with a homer, and Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping did the same thing with a solo blast of his own in the fifth.

Whitman will take a break from conference play this weekend to host the Bud Kight Invitational at Borleske Stadium. The Blues will face Redlands University in a four-game series slated to begin Friday, April 19.
