The Men's and Women's golf teams warmed up for this week's NWC Championship with Match Play victories over the University of Puget Sound on Sunday at Langdon Farms golf course in Aurora, OR.Â
The men's side saw splits in each of the first three foursomes with both Whitman and UPS tallying a winning point. In the lead foursome, Whitman's #1
Mason Remington lost a 3&2 decision to Cade Streeter while the Blues #2
Ben Sweet sealed his victory over Drew Spitzer by winning the 18th hole for a 2 up margin.
In the next foursome,
Eshan Singh (WC) was victorious by a 4#3 margin over Xavier Feasey-Allen while Natham Nemali (WC) lost by a 3&2 count to Ethan Baker.
At the five and six positions,
Jack Garnsey (WC) losta 3&2 decision to Mickey Cosgrove while
Parker Krovisky (WC) won by the same margin against Jack Kuntz.
In the final deciding match at #7, on the final hole
Mussa Guzha (WC) teed off with a one hole advantage and won that deciding hole to finish his match 2 up and give the Blues a 4-3 Match Play victory over the Loggers.Â
In Match Play, players win, lose or tie each hole and the winner is determined by how many holes they won compared to their opponent.
On the women's side. the lead foursome split points, with Whitman's #1
Katya Kurkoski beating Puget Sound's Kaila Bonawitz 4&3 while Ellens the Blues
Ellena Jeong's match came down to the final hole. Kira Goode (UPS) won that hole for a 2 up victory.
In the 3-4 foursome,
Cindy Luo (WC) overcame a four down deficit after the first eight holes to storm back for a 3&1 win while
Beatrice Archer (WC) had the best individual round of the competition while defeating Cayton Smith 8&6. In the final 5 spot,
Samantha Torres (WC) beat Delaney Mitchell 6&4.
The Blues return to Langdon Farms for the NWC Championship April 20-21. The men enter the tournament in first place in the season long standings, followed closely by Whitworth and defending champion Willamette.
