Baseball Takes Two From Redlands, Wins Series

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - In what turned out to be a tale of two games, the Whitman College baseball team came out on top in both, sweeping a doubleheader from Redlands on the final day of the Bud Kight Memorial Invitational. The Blues won the opener 1-0 and took the nightcap 12-3.

Game 1
The opener saw Mateus Conaway throw a complete-game, four-hit shutout and Brandon Ting club a solo homer in the second to highlight the 1-0 win for the Blues.

The Blues needed every bit of the impressive outing from Conaway (4-4) who struck out five and issued only three bases on balls. Ting and Nate Korahais led the Blues each with two hits, Ting's including the solo shot for the game's lone run.

Nathan Buchan had a quality outing of his own for the Bulldogs, working six and one-third innings and allowing the one run on seven hits. Jakob Russell came on to pitch a scoreless final one and two-thirds innings.

Despite scattering four hits, Conaway ran into trouble in the first as the Bulldogs put a pair of runners in scoring position. After escaping unscathed, he retired a run of 10 straight hitters before again finding himself in similar trouble. Conaway again got himself out of the jam and shut down the Redlands order the rest of the way.

Game 2
Whitman scored 11 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, including a seven-run fourth to blow out the Bulldogs in game two. Jack Hostetler was provided more than enough offense, picking up the win in seven complete innings allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts.

The Blues clubbed three homeruns on the day, none more spectacular than Garrett Runyan's grand slam in the fourth inning. Beck Maguire posted three hits including a double, three runs and two RBI with Runyan adding two hits, a double, one run and six RBI. Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping (1 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) to round out the power displayed by the Blues in the game.

Redland's runs came in the fourth and ninth innings. Preece doubled to open the fourth and later scored with McLelland delivering an RBI double and scoring a run in the ninth.

Efron suffered the loss after lasting only two and one-third innings and giving up five runs on five hits.

Before returning for the home stretch of conference play, the Blues will host Eastern Oregon on Tuesday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m.
