McMINNVILLE, Ore. -
Beck Maguire led the Blues with two hits and one run,
Brandon Ting homered in the sixth inning but it wasn't enough as the Whitman College baseball team opened the season with a 5-3 loss to Puget Sound in the NWC Round Robin hosted by Linfield at Roy Helser Field.
Russell Peterson (0-1) battled through six and two-thirds innings but was tagged with the loss. He struck out eight Wildcat batters while allowing four runs on six hits but issuing seven bases on balls. Carl Moland-Kovash finished the seventh inning and worked a solid eighth and ninth. He allowed only one hit, a run-scoring double in the eighth to Charlie Deggeller (2 H, 3 R) to put the Loggers (5-1) up 5-3.
Decker had a solid outing for UPS. In seven complete innings of work, he stuck out 10 batters while allowing the three runs on five hits.
Whitman struck first with a Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping sacrifice fly in the second, but Kahiau Teruya's two-run homer one inning later put UPS up.
Ting's homer in the sixth snatched the lead back for the Blues, but the Loggers again went for extra bases to retake the lead for good, this time a two-run double from Deggeller.
Whitman closes the Round Robin on Saturday with a pair of games. First up is Pacific Lutheran at 11:00 a.m. followed by Linfield at 2:00 p.m.
