Baseball Splits At UPS In NWC Opener

TACOMA, Wash. - Halen Otte homered twice, once in each game of a doubleheader and the Whitman College baseball team opened Northwest Conference play with a doubleheader split at the University of Puget Sound on Monday afternoon.

Puget Sound 10 Whitman 6
The opener saw Jack Bickerton (1 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Otte (1 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) both hit solo homers for the Blues (9-4, 1-1 NWC) in the early innings. UPS rallied for nine runs across the fifth and sixth innings and held on for the conference-opening win.

Wyatt Adams tossed a strong five complete innings but was hit with the loss after allowing three runs in the fifth inning to give the Loggers the lead. He finished with a final line of three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts.

Kamihara led the Loggers with three hits, two runs and two RBI, and Allen added two hits, one run and three RBI. Rattie picked up the win for UPS, tossing six and one-third innings with five earned runs on eight hits.

Whitman trailed by seven runs but made a game of it after scoring four in the seventh inning. Nik Greb (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI), AJ Romero (2 H, 1 RBI) and Nate Korahais (2 H, 1 RBI) all collected RBI to make it a three-run game. It wouldn't be enough though as the Loggers held on for the win.

Whitman 6 Puget Sound 2
The nightcap saw Oliver Brown toss a solid five innings and pick up the win aided by a scoreless four innings from his bullpen. After Brown exited the game following the fifth inning, Tanner Coddington came on to pitch a scoreless seventh and Carl Moland-Kovash was borderline unhittable in allowing no runs on one hit with four strikeouts in the game's final three innings.

Homeruns by Otte (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Jonah Chang (1 H, 1 R, 2 RBI) proved to be the difference in the game. After the Loggers plated a pair in the second inning, Chang tied the game two innings later with one swing of the bat. His homer scored both him and Brandon Ting who had singled to open the inning.

One inning later, the Blues took the lead after Otte crushed his second homer of the day. Tristan Buehring added a hit, one run and two RBI.

Decker was tagged with the loss for the Loggers after allowing three runs on seven hits in five complete innings.

The Blues and Loggers conclude their series on Tuesday with another doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.. The opener will be the final NWC game of the series with the finale played as a non-conference game.
