Baseball Sweeps Twinbill From Lewis & Clark

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College baseball team rebounded nicely after dropping three of four at Puget Sound, sweeping a doubleheader today against Lewis & Clark in the team's Northwest Conference home opener on Saturday at Borleske Field.

Whitman 13 Lewis & Clark 9
Homeruns from AJ Romero (2 H, 2 R, 2 RBI), Brandon Ting (3 H, 3 R, 3 RBI), Jack Bickerton (2 H, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Beck Maguire (2 H, 4 R, 4 RBI) accounted for eight of Whitman's runs as the Blues outlasted the Pioneers in the opener.

The Blues inflicted the damage early. After both Ting and Maguire reached base in the first inning, Bickerton cleared the bases when he crushed a pitch over the left field wall to put his team up 3-0.

The barrage continued as Romero hit a solo homer in the second and Bickerton smashed a grand slam in the fourth inning to put the Blues up 10-1. Ting's two-run homer came in the seventh in what turned out to be some needed insurance. The Pioneers scored five runs in the ninth inning, but Tanner Coddington came on and closed the door to preserve the win.

On a short week for the Blues, Wyatt Adams (3-2) pitched six strong innings and picked up the win allowing four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Bret Potter and Justin Cavagnaro led the Pioneers at the plate, both posting three hits with Cavagnaro adding two runs and two RBI. Joaquin Sandoval added two hits including a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Whitman 8 Lewis & Clark 2
Tristan Buehring's two-run double in the first and Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping's bases-clearing double in the sixth provided Whitman's fireworks in the nightcap.

After Bickerton's RBI hit scored the game's first run, Buehring ripped a two-run double to score Bickerton and Halen Otte.

Oliver Brown (5-0) picked up the win for the Blues, working six and two-thirds innings while allowing two runs on seven hits.

Brown exited one half inning after the Blues had broken the game open. In a pinch-hitting role, Mieszkowski-Lapping smacked a three-run double that sliced down the right field line and landed just fair.
Aikawa led Pioneers at the plate with three hits including a double and a run scored.

Whitman and Lewis & Clark conclude their series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
