Baseball Splits Twinbill At Willamette

SALEM, Ore. - The Whitman College baseball team cruised in the opener but surrendered a late lead in the nightcap to split a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Willamette on Friday evening.

Whitman 8 Willamette 0
Wyatt Adams (4-2) was brilliant in tossing his second straight road shutout. In a complete game effort, he scattered only four hits while striking out nine and walking only two.

AJ Romero and Beck Maguire led the Blues (17-12, 8-6 NWC) at the plate, both recording three hits with Maguire adding one run and one RBI, and Romero scoring a pair of runs.

Granucci had half of Willamette's hits in batting 2-4. Verespy (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits in five innings of work.

Whitman put numbers on the scoreboard early with two runs in the first inning. The Blues would have to ride the arm of Adams for the first half of the game however until the bats came alive again with six runs over the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Jack Bickerton's (2 H, 2 RBI) two-run base hit put the Blues up 5-0 in the sixth inning and Brandon Ting (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) capped the scoring with a solo homer two innings later.

Nate Petz added two hits, one run and RBI.

The nightcap saw the Blues lose in heartbreaking fashion. Whitman surrendered five runs in the bottom of the ninth, three via a hit batsman with the bases loaded for a one-run loss.

Maguire and Luke Malzewski led the way at the plate, both recording three hits with Maguire scoring three runs and Malzewski adding one run and one RBI.

Jack Bickerton added two hits, both two-run doubles, to go along with four RBI. The first gave the Blues a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning, and the second put his team up by three runs.

Carl Moland-Kovash was tagged with the loss in one and one-third innings of relief. Schikore earned the win for the Bearcats after working seven innings and allowing five runs but only one earned.

The Blues and Bearcats close out their series with a single game on Saturday, April 12 at 10:00 a.m.
