Baseball Wins Extra-Inning Thriller Over Eastern Oregon

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Halen Otte gave his team the lead with a homer in the eighth, Luke Malzewski stole home in the 10th and the Whitman College baseball team rallied for a 10-9 extra-inning victory over Eastern Oregon on Tuesday night at Borleske Stadium.

Otte (2 H, 1 R, 4 RBI, 1 2B) and Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping (2 H, 1 R, 3 RBI) both clubbed three-run homers with Otte's coming in the eighth inning to give the Blues a one-run lead.

Eastern Oregon scored in the ninth to force the game into extra innings where Whitman loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th inning after back-to-back intentional walks. An errant pitch on Nik Greb's squeeze attempt allowed Malzewski to sprint home and beat the tag at home plate, thus walking off the win for the Blues.

Carl Moland-Kavoash (2-0) earned the win for the Blues after pitching a scoreless 10th inning.

Each team plated four runs through the first four innings with the Mountaineers striking first with two runs in their first at bats.

The Blues played the long ball in the second and third innings to take the lead. Jonah Chang ripped a solo homerun in the second inning, then Mieszkowski-Lapping crushed his three-run shot one inning later to put his team up 4-2.

EOU battled back to tie the game one inning later, but the Blues responded two innings later to go back up by two. Otte's double scored both Nate Petz and Noah Braunel and gave Whitman a 6-4 lead through six innings.

The seesaw affair continued but this time with EOU plating four in the seventh inning and retaking the lead they had in the first inning. Run-scoring hits from Alex Olague and Carson Gerding highlighted the inning and put the Mountaineers up 8-6 before Otte put the Blues up with his three-run scorcher over the left centerfield wall.

Whitman returns to action this Saturday and Sunday for a three-game Northwest Conference series at Willamette.
