WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitman College men's tennis team made a winning return to its home courts, rolling past George Fox 7-0 in its home opener in Northwest Conference play on Saturday at the Whitman Tennis Courts.
Whitman swept all six singles matches, dropping only 10 total games in the process.
Hanri Luo set the tone with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Bernardo Martinez at No. 6, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 victory from
Charles Boyden over Joseph Vece on court five as the Blues quickly moved in front.
Niklas Jensen was equally sharp at No. 2, cruising past Keita Shoji 6-1, 6-2, and
Artem Manov lost just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Luis Hernandez on court three.
Guillermo Rodriguez completed a straight-sets victory over Aiden Cruz, 6-0, 6-4, before top-line standout
Alexander Stage closed the day with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Zach Moore at No. 1 singles.
In doubles, the Blues bounced back from an early setback to claim the overall edge in team momentum. George Fox struck first at the top spot, with Moore and Cruz edging Manov and
Charles Rush 6-4. Whitman responded on court two, where Stage and Jensen teamed up for a 6-2 win over Hernandez and Shoji, then secured the doubles advantage when Luo and Rodriguez posted a 6-3 victory against Vece and Martinez at the No. 3 position.
The match marked Whitman's first home date of the spring after opening the conference slate on the road earlier in February, with the Blues now adding a convincing home sweep to their Northwest Conference resume. The Blues continue league play on Sunday when they host Lewis & Clark at the Whitman Tennis Courts.
