Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

#32 Women's Tennis Edged At #25 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The 32nd-ranked Whitman College women's tennis team came up just short in a top-25 road battle Thursday, falling 4-3 at No. 23 Christopher Newport at Eyre Courts.

"CNU played really well and we fought, getting both three setters," said head coach John Hein. "This was the kind of battle that is tough today, but we'll learn and grow from it. We get another opportunity tomorrow against Kenyon."

The Blues (11-3) rallied from a 1-0 deficit after doubles to split singles, getting three-set wins from Sascha Wells and Gloria Lau and a straight-set victory from Bailey Bell. Wells outlasted Samantha Robertson 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-7 on court three, clinching her match in a deciding super tiebreak. Lau also bounced back on court six, defeating Erin Gross 4-6, 6-3, 10-1 to keep Whitman within striking distance. Bell provided a strong point at five, cruising past Lindsey Bergelin 6-4, 6-1.

Christopher Newport (3-6) took control early by securing the doubles point behind wins at the top and third positions. The Captains' No. 1 duo of Kendal Chang and Kylie Schaefer topped Nana Vang and Renata Rosell 6-4 before Robertson and Gross edged Julia Longpre and Jules Thompson 7-6 (4) at No. 3.

Wells and Bell tallied Whitman's lone doubles win, a 6-4 decision at No. 2 over Nathalie Lanne and Bergelin.

In singles, Chang extended the Captains' lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Vang on court one, and Schaefer followed with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Rosell at No. 2. Eva Taylor secured Christopher Newport's fourth point at No. 4, defeating Longpre 6-1, 6-2. Despite the setback, Whitman's late singles surge showcased the team's depth and resilience in its second straight ranked matchup away from home.

The Blues continue their Newport News stay with a neutral site match on Friday against Kenyon. Start time is set for 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time.
