Baseball Walks It Off Twice In Doubleheader Sweep of Willamette

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitman College baseball team twice walked off Willamette University to complete a Northwest Conference doubleheader sweep, stretching the Blues' win streak to three games Saturday at Borleske Stadium.

Whitman took the opener 10-9 in 11 innings, rallying from a late deficit and winning it when Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping ripped a walk-off double to center to score Nate Petz in the bottom of the 11th. The Blues then finished the sweep with a 7-4 victory in the nightcap, capped by Petz's walk-off grand slam to left in the bottom of the ninth.

In game one, Whitman erased an early 9-4 hole with a pair of runs in the ninth and three more in the 11th after Willamette had taken a three-run lead in the top half. The Blues loaded the bases in the 11th on an error and back-to-back singles from Nick Teng and Petz, then plated two unearned runs before Mieszkowski-Lapping's game-winning shot. Halen Otte drove in four runs, while Teng, Petz and Jonah Chang all finished with multi-hit games as Whitman pounded out 15 hits.

On the mound, Garen Geoghegan picked up the win in relief, working four and one-third innings and allowing just two runs before Hawthorne Moody recorded the final out of the top of the 11th to set up the walk-off.

The nightcap turned into a late-inning thriller after Whitman trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth. The Blues scratched across two runs in the eighth, then opened the ninth with Landon Runyan getting hit by a pitch and the bases loading on a pair of Willamette errors and a fielder's choice. Luke Malzewski was hit by a pitch to force in a run, setting the stage for Petz, who launched a one ball-two strike pitch over the left-field wall for a walk-off grand slam and a five-run ninth.

Petz finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs in the nightcap, while Malzewski, Teng, Otte and Teng all contributed key plate appearances in the comeback frame. Oliver Brown started and worked five and two-thirds innings, and Jack Finn earned the win in relief, striking out six over three and one-third innings and holding Willamette to a single run.

With the sweep, Whitman improves to 9-19-1 overall and 4-10 in NWC play, while Willamette falls to 7-19 and 4-10 in the conference. The teams close out the three-game series Sunday at Borleske Stadium at 11:00 a.m.
