Baseball Tops Linfield In Series Finale

McMINNVILLE, Ore. — Whitman College erupted for four runs in the seventh inning and the pitching staff made it stand up, as the Blues rallied past Linfield 6-5 on Sunday in the finale of a Northwest Conference series at Roy Helser Field.

Whitman (11-21-1, 6-12 NWC) trailed 5-2 after Linfield used a three-run sixth inning — capped by a two-run homer from Cole Hubka — to seize control. The Blues responded immediately in the top of the seventh, stringing together five hits to surge in front and hand the Wildcats (20-13, 12-6) just their sixth conference loss.

Catcher Nate Petz and first baseman Halen Otte keyed the comeback, each finishing with three hits as Whitman outhit Linfield 15-10. Petz went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, while Otte tallied a 3-for-5 day with three runs scored.

Down three, Whitman opened the decisive seventh with consecutive singles from Luke Malzewski and Nick Teng before Otte delivered his third hit of the afternoon to load the bases. Petz followed with a run-scoring single to left to cut the deficit to 5-3 and chase reliever Luke Schoeffler.

After a Linfield pitching change, Landon Runyan lifted a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Teng to make it 5-4. Designated hitter Jonah Chang then ripped a double down the left-field line to score Otte and tie the game, and Petz raced to third. Christopher Nobrega completed the rally with a sacrifice fly to center, driving in Petz with the go-ahead run.

Whitman's bullpen did the rest. Right-hander Garen Geoghegan (2-1) earned the win in relief, working one inning and allowing three runs on three hits in the sixth before the offense picked him up. Isaiah Granado bridged the seventh and eighth, giving up just one run on two hits over 2.2 innings, and Hawthorne Moody came on to record the final out in the ninth for his first save.

Linfield threatened in its final at-bat when Ely Kennel and Rylan Gullard stroked back-to-back one-out singles, putting the winning run on base. After a popup to third, Whitman turned to Moody, who induced a flyout to right field from cleanup hitter Wyatt Hurley to end the game.

Whitman starter Dylan Colvin was solid over five-plus innings, surrendering two runs on five hits while striking out two. He left with the Blues leading 2-1 before the Wildcats' late power surge.

Casey Struckmeier started for Linfield and allowed two runs on seven hits over four innings. Reliever Zach Jaeger (0-2) took the loss after being charged with two runs without recording an out in the seventh, while Jacob Bishop and Zack Hampson combined for the final two and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Whitman next takes on Pacific Lutheran in its final home series of the season. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
