Baseball Drops Pacific Series Opener

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Whitman College baseball team opened its three-game Northwest Conference series at Pacific University with an early jolt but ultimately fell 13-3 to the Boxers on Friday night at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

Whitman (6-17, 2-8 NWC) jumped in front in the top of the first when Jonah Chang turned on a 2-1 pitch and lifted a solo home run to left, staking the Blues to a 1-0 lead. Luke Malzewski followed with a multi-hit night, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, while Whitman totaled 11 hits but stranded 13 runners.

Pacific (7-18, 4-9 NWC) answered with a decisive five-run third inning and never trailed again. After a two-out double from Will Shelor, Nathaniel Chapman's RBI single tied the game, and the Boxers kept the inning alive with a single and a walk before shortstop Javin Hamura punched a two-run single to center. Trevor Kazahaya then doubled into the left-field gap to score two more, giving Pacific a 4-1 advantage.

The Boxers continued to add on with a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth, capitalizing on an error, a balk and a passed ball to stretch the margin. Kazahaya finished 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI, while Hamura matched him with three hits and four RBI to pace a 15-hit Pacific attack. Miles Bergman chipped in two hits, drove in a run and stole two bases as the hosts built an 11-1 lead through six innings.

Whitman broke through again in the eighth when pinch hitter Noah Braunel drew a walk and came around to score on Solomon Kikukawa-Teriong's RBI single to right. The Blues tacked on a final run in the ninth as Jordan Montemayor and Braydon Olson worked back-to-back walks and Montemayor scored on a ground ball that was misplayed at short. Kikukawa-Teriong, Braunel, Montemayor and Christian Rivera all provided quality plate appearances off the bench in the late innings.

On the mound, Oliver Brown (1-4) started for Whitman and was charged with nine earned runs over foru and one-third innings, striking out two. Dolan Wynne was a bright spot out of the bullpen, working the final three innings and allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Pacific starter Governor Aufranc (2-6) earned the win, holding Whitman to one run on seven hits over six complete innings. He walked two and struck out one, surrendering only Chang's first-inning homer before turning the game over to the bullpen.

The series concludes with a Saturday doubleheader slated for 12:00 p.m.
