Braunel Walks It Off In Wild 21-19 Win Over Eastern Oregon

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Whitman College erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, capped by a walk-off three-run home run from Noah Braunel, to stun Eastern Oregon University 21-19 in a wild non-conference slugfest Tuesday night at Borleske Stadium.

The Blues (7-19-1) pounded out 16 hits and erased a 19-13 deficit in their final at-bat to outlast the Mountaineers in a four-hour contest that featured 40 runs, 31 hits and 24 walks. Braunel, who entered as a pinch hitter in the sixth, delivered the decisive blow with two outs in the ninth, launching a three-run shot to left that scored Luke Malzewski and Christian Rivera and completed Whitman's biggest inning of the night.

Whitman led 12-7 through four innings and 13-12 after five, but Eastern Oregon (10-27) kept answering behind a huge night from shortstop Jace Schow and leadoff man Andrew Demia. Schow finished 3-for-4 with two triples and five RBIs, while Demia went 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored as Eastern Oregon built a 19-13 cushion with two runs in the eighth and four more in the top of the ninth.

Sam Mieszkowski-Lapping paced the Whitman offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBIs, and scoring three runs. Catcher Halen Otte added two hits, including a two-run double in the first inning, and finished with three runs scored and two RBIs, while designated hitter Nathan Wilson went 3-for-5 with four runs and a stolen base. Shortstop Jordan Montemayor drove in three and scored once, and Rivera added three RBIs from the middle of the order.

Whitman's offense set the tone early with a four-run first inning. Otte ripped a two-run double to tie the game after Eastern Oregon scored once in the top half, Mieszkowski-Lapping followed with an RBI single, and Montemayor added a run-scoring hit to make it 4-1. The Blues put up five more in the third, highlighted by RBI hits from Montemayor, Rivera, Malzewski and Christopher Nobrega to build a 9-4 lead.

Eastern Oregon chipped away, scoring three in the fourth and five in the fifth, with Schow's two run-scoring triples anchoring the middle innings and turning a 12-7 Whitman advantage into a 12-12 tie. Mieszkowski-Lapping's solo homer in the bottom of the fifth briefly put Whitman back on top 13-12 before Demia's RBI double in the sixth and his two-run homer in the eighth pushed the Mountaineers ahead 15-13. Four more runs in the ninth, helped by a series of walks and a two-run single from Kai Brown, gave Eastern Oregon what looked like a safe 19-13 lead.

Whitman had one more rally left. Braunel walked to open the bottom of the ninth and Otte singled before Solomon Kikukawa-Teriong worked a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

Mieszkowski-Lapping then drilled a two-run double to left, and a series of wild pitches brought in two more runs as the Blues clawed within 19-17. After a sacrifice fly from Braydon Olson made it 19-18, Rivera reached on an error and Malzewski reached on a fielder's choice to set the stage for Braunel. Down to Whitman's final out, he turned on a pitch and drove it over the left-field fence, touching off a celebration as the Blues walked off with the 21-19 victory.

Dolan Wynne earned the win in relief for Whitman, recording the final out in the top of the ninth. 10 pitchers combined to throw 440 pitches in the marathon, which lasted 4 hours, 8 minutes.

The Blues return to Northwest Conference play with a three-game series against Willamette this weekend at Borleske Stadium.
