Valiant Effort From Women's Lacrosse Falls Short In NCAA Loss At CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whitman College women's lacrosse team stepped onto the national stage for the first time in program history Saturday afternoon, showing resilience but coming up short in a 20-10 NCAA opening-round loss to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Merritt Field.

Playing in its first NCAA tournament game, Whitman (13-8) fell behind 11-2 at halftime before responding with a spirited third quarter that saw the Blues outscore the Athenas 6-3 and briefly seize momentum.

Sarah Hawkins and Emily Odegaard led the Whitman offense with two goals apiece, with Hawkins adding two assists for a team-high four points. Ellie Milesi and Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky also scored twice, and Lola McConaghy and Serafin Miller each chipped in one goal. Miller finished with three assists, and the Blues recorded helpers on six of their 10 goals.

After CMS rolled to a 9-0 lead midway through the second quarter, Whitman broke through when McConaghy converted a feed from Miller for the program's first NCAA tournament goal. Odegaard added another late in the period to give the Blues momentum heading into the break.

Whitman's best stretch came in the third quarter, when Miller opened the scoring with an unassisted strike and the Blues' offense caught fire. Pasena-Littlesky, Hawkins and Milesi combined for five more goals, including a free-position finish from Milesi that cut the deficit and underscored Whitman's composure in its national-tournament debut.

Goalkeeper Renn Novak anchored the effort in net, finishing with 15 saves as Whitman battled against an Athena attack that controlled the draw circle and generated 40 shots. The Blues collected 26 ground balls, nearly matching CMS, and went 15-for-19 on clears while converting 2 of 4 free-position attempts. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (14-5) advanced behind six goals from Amelia Ulmer and five from Ella Brown, while Grace Minturn added three goals and five assists.

Despite the final score, Whitman's first appearance on the NCAA stage highlighted the rapid rise of the program and set a sturdy foundation for future postseason runs.
