Men’s Soccer Tops Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-1

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Whitman College men's soccer team closed its two-match road trip with a 3-1 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday at Whitworth Soccer Field.

After Mary Hardin-Baylor struck first, Whitman answered with three unanswered goals, including two in the final 12 minutes, to improve to 2-1-1 on the season.

Eric Ortiz gave the Crusaders an early lead in the 13th minute, but Whitman responded 70 seconds later when Kevin Serrano scored his first goal of the season to level the match at 1-1.

The teams remained tied through halftime despite Mary Hardin-Baylor holding an 11-7 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes. Whitman goalkeeper Tait Whittemore made five saves in the victory, including four in the first half.

Whitman broke through in the 79th minute. Riki Kobayashi, who had entered the match less than two minutes earlier, scored his first goal of the season at the 78:36 mark to put the Blues ahead 2-1.

Luis Mendez Caballero provided the insurance goal in the 88th minute, scoring his first of the season to seal the result.

Mary Hardin-Baylor finished with a 17-14 edge in total shots and a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, but Whitman generated eight corner kicks and limited the Crusaders to a scoreless second half. Hughston Taggart made three saves for Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Serrano led Whitman with five shots and two shots on goal. Mendez Caballero added two shots, while Kobayashi scored on his lone shot on target.

The match was tied 1-1 at halftime before Whitman outscored Mary Hardin-Baylor 2-0 after the break. Whitman was assessed 10 fouls and two yellow cards; Mary Hardin-Baylor recorded 11 fouls and two cautions.

The Blues are next in action when they kick off Northwest Conference hosting Linfield on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 12:00 p.m.
