Women's Soccer Blanks Lewis & Clark, Finishes Perfect NWC Weekend

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Emma Foley and Kiki Glorioso scored less than four minutes apart late in the second half as the Whitman College women's soccer team defeated Lewis & Clark 2-0 in Northwest Conference action Sunday at James Hayner Field.

"The team played an excellent match today," commented head coach Michelle Voiland of her team's effort. "Lewis & Clark is a very physical team and our players were able to handle that part of the game and still play our game. Excellent work executing the game plan and being extremely patient. What a match for Emma Foley with a goal and an assist. We were able to utilize our roster and in the heat and it paid off in spades. We will will enjoy the two wins at home and prepare for Whitworth in Spokane on Wednesday."

The Blues (3-1-2 overall, 2-0-0 NWC) capped a perfect opening weekend of conference play with the victory, breaking through after a scoreless first 77 minutes.

Avery Cohen set up the eventual game-winner in the 78th minute, finding Foley who turned beautifully on her defender inside of the box, creating just enough space to net her first goal of the season at the 77:18 mark. Whitman added insurance at 81:16 when Foley assisted Glorioso's first goal of the year.

Whitman controlled much of the match, holding a 14-3 advantage in shots, an 8-2 edge in shots on goal and an 8-2 margin in corner kicks. The Blues also owned 64% of possession.

Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Lucia Barron Nunez kept the River Otters level through much of the afternoon, making five saves in 81:28 before being relieved after Whitman's second goal. Mallory Symons added one save in the final 8:32.

Whitman goalkeeper Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky made two second-half saves to record the shutout. Lewis & Clark's best scoring chances came in quick succession near the hour mark, but Pasena-Littlesky denied shots from Grace Smith in the 60th minute and Maggie Faye 22 seconds later.

The Blues generated five shots and five corner kicks in the opening half but could not find the breakthrough. Whitman increased the pressure after halftime, outshooting the River Otters 9-2 over the final 45 minutes.

Foley finished with a goal and an assist, while Cohen and Glorioso each contributed a goal involvement. Mia Robertson led Whitman with two shots on target, and Foley placed one of her two attempts on frame.

The Blues are next in action on Wednesday when they travel to Whitworth for a midweek road contest set for 2:30 p.m.
