FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Whitman College men's soccer team began the 2026 campaign Friday with a 3-0 setback against the University of Mary Washington at Turf Stadium.
The Blues generated 12 shots and put five on target, but Mary Washington goalkeeper Zaine Asim stopped all five attempts to preserve the shutout. The Eagles held a 26-12 advantage in overall shots and converted three of their 16 shots on goal.
Mary Washington took the lead in the 18th minute when Elliot Berg finished a chance off an assist from Gerrard Valoyi. The hosts carried that one-goal edge into halftime despite Whitman creating several opportunities, including first-half saves by Asim on shots from
Aiden Guenther,
Alex Evans and
Braxton Nemes.
The Eagles extended their lead on Valoyi's penalty-kick goal in the 59th minute, then added their final goal in the 75th minute. Braeden Kelly scored off a setup from Darragh Cahill to complete the scoring.
Whitman goalkeeper
Tait Whittemore made four saves during the opening 45 minutes, while
Niclas Isensee recorded nine saves in the second half. Together, the two Whitman keepers totaled 13 saves.
Kevin Serrano led the Blues with three shots, while Evans added two attempts. Guenther,
Nathan Alvarado and Nemes each recorded one shot on goal.
Whitman earned three corner kicks and had a 16-6 edge in fouls, while Mary Washington finished with four corners.
