FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Sunday afternoon's 6-3 Northwest Conference victory over host Pacific (Ore.) University pushes the winning streak of the 13th-ranked Whitman College's men's tennis team to five in a row as the Missionaries earned their second win of the weekend with the triumph over the Boxers.
The win improves Whitman's record to 6-1 overall and 2-0 within the conference while Pacific (2-1, 1-1) suffers its first loss of the season. In addition to their national ranking the Missionaries are No. 4 in the West Region; Pacific is rated 10th in the West.
Saturday's 5-4 victory at George Fox University required the Missionaries to dig themselves out of a 3-0 hole after doubles.
Sunday's win gained momentum early with a Whitman sweep of the doubles matches. Revamped doubles pairing were the order of the day as each of the three tandems were playing together for the first time this season.
At No. 1
Colton Malesovas and
James Rivers took an 8-6 win against Brennan Faith and Grayson Frazier, while
Petar Jivkov and
Jake Hoeger dispatched Pacific's Giancarlo Battaglia and Josh Bernstein at 2-doubles by the same score. The No. 3 tandem of
Zach Hewlin and
Phillip Locklear were forced into extra games by the Boxers' Clark Wininger and Oscar Wight, but the Whitman duo prevailed, 9-7, to allow the M's to close out the doubles sweep.
With that three-point lead head coach
Jeff Northam was able to bump his lineup upward, and he received three points from his Nos. 4, 5 and 6 players.
Chase Friedman downed Bernstein in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) at 4-singles in the easiest match of the three wins.
Rivers took on Wight at No. 5 and won the opening set, 6-4, but had to battle for the second set. With the set knotted at 6-6 Rivers was able to complete the tie-break (7-5) for the 7-6 set and match win.
Robert Carter was forced even further against Pacific's Wininger at 6-singles. Carter took the opener, 7-5, but fell Wininger took the second in a tie-breaker, 7-6(5). In the deciding super tie-breaker it was Carter who came out on top for the 1-0 (10-6) win.
Northam will split his squad for their next matches on Saturday. The Missionaries are scheduled to play Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, at 11 a.m. while across the state in Tacoma a difference squad will face off with the University of Puget Sound at 10 a.m.
