WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College's men's tennis team had little trouble downing visiting Willamette University, 9-0, Saturday morning in the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center but it was the 15th-ranked Missionaries'
Gary Ho who registered one of the rarest of feats in the Northwest Conference match, posting a perfect "golden set" during his straight-set victory at No. 5 singles.
Ho didn't lose a single point in his 6-0 opening-set win against the Bearcats' Derek Lund. The domination continued into the second set where Ho rolled to a 6-1 win.
Whitman's doubles tandems were nearly as perfect as Ho in the morning's initial matches, racing out to wins in all three matches while losing only a single game between the three.
The three-point lead blossomed during singles play as Whitman captured straight-set wins in all six matches.
Whitman head coach
Jeff Northam used 11 different players in Saturday's lineup, with
Joey Diaz the only one to compete in both doubles and singles. Diaz teamed with
Jacob Christensen at 2-doubles in an 8-0 rout of the Bearcats' Lund and Jack Schreiber, then Diaz completed his morning with a pair of 6-0 wins over Samuel Rowe in their No. 6 singles match.
Whitman is back on the courts Sunday morning when Pacific (Ore.) University visits Walla Walla. The Boxers, ranked 10th in the ITA West Region -- Whitman is No. 4 in the region -- sit second in the league standings heading into a Saturday afternoon match in Spokane, Washington, against host Whitworth University before making their way south into the Columbia River Valley.
