WALLA WALLA, Wash. – It was quick and painless Saturday evening in a non-conference men's tennis match at the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center, as host and 18th-ranked Whitman College defeated Cal Lutheran University by a count of 9-0, winning without surrendering a set to the Kingsmen. The match against CLU was the finale of three on the opening day of the 2016 Whitman Invite.
The Missionaries improve their season mark to 5-3 while CLU, which dropped a 6-3 decision earlier in the day at Bratton to Swarthmore College, slips to 1-5 on the season.
The conquest of the Kingsmen began from the opening serves in doubles action. Each of the Whitties' tandems would roll to quick wins, giving up just a cumulative total of six games throughout the match's initial battles.
Singles scores were just as dominating for Whitman, too. In six matches Whitman players lost a combined total of 18 games while pulling out straight-set wins at each spot.
Chase Friedman -- one of four Whitties to record a win in both singles and doubles -- added to a 3-doubles win with
Gary Ho by taking a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 3 singles. Ho picked up a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Lucas Tilly at 6-singles for his second point.
Petar Jivkov teamed with
Jake Hoeger for a quick 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, then Jivkov strolled through a 6-2, 6-2 win at 4-singles to notch another Whitman point.
Also picking up two points for the team was
Adam Rapoport who closed his evening with a 6-2, 6-1 win at 5-singles after rollicking to an 8-2 at No. 2 doubles with
Robert Carter.
Earlier in the day 31st-ranked Swarthmore (Pa.) College earned a 6-3 win over CLU, then pounded out an 8-1 victory over Lewis & Clark College in the afternoon match.
Sunday's slate begins with Lewis & Clark squaring off with CLU in Bratton, with the Swarthmore, Whitman match scheduled for 1 p.m. outside on the Whitman Tennis Courts if weather permits.
