GEARHART, Ore. Sunday was moving day for Whitman's men's golf team, as the Blues jumped up one spot to finish fourth at the George Fox Invitational with a final two-day total of 624 (314-310) at the par-72, 6,501-yard Gearhart Golf Course.
In fifth after Saturday's round the Whitman foursome of
Tobias Zabel,
Mario Santos-Davidson,
Eric Wasserman and
Luc Birchfield trimmed four strokes from Sunday's round to record the program's lowest one-day total since April 2016.
Zabel (76-78—154) led the way for Whitman with a 10-over par score that was 11th on the individual leaderboard.
Santos-Davidson (79-76—155) was plus-11 for the weekend, carding his lowest round of the season Sunday while finishing in a tie for 12th place.
The Whitman low round on Sunday came from
Eric Wasserman (T-17th; 81-75—156) whose 75 tied his season-opening round from September.
Birchfield finished in a tie for 26th place after posting a 17-over 161 (78-83).
Also carding improvements from Saturday were
Charlie Schneider (85-81—166) and
Will Selman (87-83—170).
Willamette won the team title with a two-day total of 592 (298-294), 13 strokes ahead of runner-up and host George Fox University (302-303—605). The individual medalist also came from Willamette as Sam Hinton (73-71—144) marched from fourth to first to capture honors with an even-par weekend.
Whitman heads to Banks, Oregon, and the Quail Valley Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday for the Northwest Conference Fall Classic, the first of the league's three 'majors.'
