PHILADELPHIA For the second consecutive day Whitman College men's tennis took care of business during a bi-coastal split-squad day Sunday, taking an early match in the East against No. 28 Christopher Newport (Va.) University, 7-2, then in the afternoon with the Walla Walla-bound split of the squad rounding out an unbeaten weekend with a 9-0 victory over Willamette University in a Northwest Conference match at the Bratton Indoor Tennis Center.
The pair of victories Sunday -- following Saturday's two wins in Philly and one at home -- lift the 24th-ranked Blues' record to 8-2 overall and 2-0 within the conference. Christopher Newport, of the Capital Athletic Conference, slipped to 3-2, and Willamette drops to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Northwest Conference.
The morning match in Philly, at weekend host Swarthmore College's Faulkner Courts, saw the Blues earn a sweep of the three doubles matches for an important 3-0 start to the national non-conference battle with the Captains.
Robert Carter and
Jake Hoeger took down CNU's Justin Cerny and David Reed, 8-4, at No. 1, shortly before Whitman's 3-doubles pairing of
Gary Ho and
Trevor Fennessy won out, 8-6, over Michael Dodd and Arttu Fiva. The sweep point came from the No. 2 tandem of
Zach Hewlin and
Petar Jivkov who scratched out a victory 8-7 (5).
Ho quickly provided the fourth point of the day with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, allowing
Chase Friedman to put up the match-clinching point with his 4 and 3 win at 4-singles.
Daniel Foster and Jivkov added two more points with wins at Nos. 5 and 2, respectively.
Back at Bratton,
Azur Ali and
Rajul Chikkalingaiah put Whitman on the board first against Willamette, racing to an 8-1 win at the No. 3 doubles spot. The second point came from
Adam Rapoport and
Alex Hwang at 2-doubles (8-2), with
Luke Targett and
Jacob Christensen staying on the court the longest...with an 8-3 win at No. 1.
Chikkalingaiah roared to a 6-0, 6-0 win at 1-singles, over the Bearcats' Aaron Schecter, for a 4-0 Whitman lead, and Rapoport added the match-clinching point with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3.
Ali, Christensen, Hwang and Targett each won out in singles action as well.
The Blues come together for their next matches, a pair of league contests. The team travels to Spokane, Washington, Saturday to take on host Whitworth University then returns to Walla Walla where on Sunday it will host 31st-ranked Pacific (Ore.) University.
