MERCER ISLAND, Wash. In an interdivisional women's tennis match-up Sunday afternoon, the Redhawks of Division I Seattle University were able to escape the upset bid of Division III Whitman College, using the doubles point win to steal a 4-3 match victory from the visiting Blues at the Mercer Island Country Club.
Whitman (4-1) split the six singles matches with Seattle (5-6) but the Redhawks had entered singles action with one point from doubles play in which it did sweep the three matches.
Andrea Gu picked up the first point of the afternoon for her Blues, downing Barbara Carey at 2-singles in a taut three-setter, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).
The Redhawks picked up points from the next two matches to finish but
Allie Wallin added one for Whitman at No. 3 with a win by retirement, and
Lori Sheng earned the third Whitman tally with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 5 over Audrey Scott.
"This was a great match today," said Whitman head coach
John Hein. "We fought hard to make it close.
"(Seattle) had a huge win yesterday," explained Hein, referencing the Redhawks' victory over UC Irvine, "so for us to battle them like this was amazing, and gives us good momentum," as the Blues head into their next matches against Northwest Conference opponents.
A string of five consecutive home matches lie ahead, beginning with a Saturday match at 1 p.m. against Whitworth University.
