McMINNVILLE, Ore. Â An 8-1 victory at Linfield College Saturday afternoon kept eighth-ranked Whitman College rolling through its Northwest Conference competition, extending a league-opening win streak to five matches.
The Blues (13-3, 5-0 NWC) headed to Linfield (2-7, 2-5) following a late-Friday match against Division I Seattle University. The host Redhawks (9-9) downed Whitman, 4-3, in the D-I format where the doubles matches count as one point.
No calculus was needed Saturday on the Wildcats' home courts where a 3-0 sweep of the doubles match were an omen of the singles outcomes.
Zach Hewlin and Peter Jivkov at No. 1,
Jake Hoeger and
Robert Carter at No. 2, and
Gary Ho and
Trevor Fennessy at 3-doubles easily took care of their business to provide the three-point lead.
Wins at singles Nos. 2-6 cemented the win, with all coming in straight sets while also limiting Wildcat opponents to wins of not more than four games combined in any of the two-set matches.
Friday's match was a near miss for Whitman.
Seattle captured the second and third doubles matches for the doubles point, but Whitman challenged back in singles play.
Jivkov at No. 2 in three sets, Ho at No. 5 in two sets and
Rajul Chikkalingaiah at 6-singles in three sets earned points for the Blues against their upper-division opponents.
Seattle won in straight sets at Nos. 3 and 4, but the match at No. 1 between Hewlin and the Redhawks' top player -- Arshak Ghazaryan -- was the barn-burner of the evening.
Ghazaryan picked up a 6-4 win in the first, but Hewlin roared back with a 6-0 thumping in the second to square the battle. One service break was the deciding factor in the third as Ghazaryan outlasted the challenge from Hewlin with another 6-4 win.
The Blues will close out the weekend with conference action Sunday at Lewis & Clark College.
