HILLSBORO, Ore. - Whitman College women's tennis senior Mary Hill and men's basketball senior Joey Hewitt have been named to the Northwest Conference's first team scholar-athlete list, announced Tuesday by the league office.

A total of 10 NWC student-athletes across 18 sports garnered the prestigious honor.

A four-year member of the Whitman women's tennis team and a four-time All-NWC honoree and All-American, Hill recorded a 22-3 doubles record (10-0 NWC) and 14-3 singles record (7-0 NWC) during her senior year. An economics major with a 3.620 GPA, Hill was the female recipient of this year's Mignon Borleske award given to a female senior by recognizing career athletic ability and accomplishments, leadership and sportsmanship qualities, and contributions to the campus and community as a whole.

In her spare time, she interned with the off-campus studies office and served as a SAAC representative. Hill coached youth tennis in her hometown of Des Moines, Iowa and in Walla Walla, teaching second graders at Sharpstein and Edison. She completed an independent study that culminated in bringing the USTA Tennis After School Zone to Blue Ridge Elementary and has completed three outstanding internships during her summers, working in marketing, legal affairs, and with the Iowa Attorney General – Consumer Protection Division where she helped write a grant to fight elder abuse, interviewing victims of elder abuse as well as mediating between businesses and consumers.

Hewitt was a three-time All-NWC honoree during his career, including first-team honors in his last two seasons. He led the Blues in scoring in his junior and senior seasons and earned preseason D3hoops First Team All-America honors, postseason NABC All-West District Second Team honors, and D3hoops Second Team All-West Region honors.

Hewitt completed his collegiate career with a degree in Psychology and a 3.391 cumulative GPA. He was the winner of Whitman's R.V. Borleske Award, which is given to a male senior by recognizing career athletic ability and accomplishments, leadership and sportsmanship qualities, and contributions to the campus and community as a whole.

Hewitt worked in the student bookstore in addition to serving as a leader in the "Party Safe" student group. He was an ACE representative for men's basketball and was a four-year mentor in the "Friends of. Children of Walla Walla" program serving disadvantaged children from the local community.
