Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Whitworth In NWC Action

SPOKANE, Wash. - Madeleine Sherry scored a game-high six goals, Garcie Maulik added four more and the Whitman College women's lacrosse team rebounded from a two-goal loss on Sunday to take down Whitworth 21-12 in Northwest Conference action on Wednesday night.

Eliza Daigle added three goals and a game-high four assists for the Blues (4-6, 3-4 NWC) whose victory was a payback of sorts after a one-goal loss to the very same Pirates on home soil only one week ago.

Sophia Maroulis played the full 60 minutes in net for Whitman and posted six saves. Hannah Lew played the first half in goal for Whitworth with Sage Fosnock playing the second half, making a combined 18 saves.

Whitman's offense and defense was on display in the first quarter. The Blues put seven goals on the scoreboard without allowing a single goal. Sherry, Maulik and Daigle each had a pair of goals to lift the Blues to the early lead.

The second quarter saw only a combined five goals as Whitworth managed to cut the deficit by one goal. The Blues doubled up the Pirates in the third quarter, however, to expand their lead. Amelia Leopold scored her second goal early in the period before Olivia Banuelos and Izzy Eggerling scored to push the lead back up to seven at 12-5 with 10:40 to play.

Whitman pushed the lead up to nine goals in the second half which ended up being the final margin of victory.

The Blues next play at Puget Sound on Sunday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m.
