Women's Lacrosse Edged By Whitworth In NWC Play

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Erin Magnuson and Eliza Daigle both scored a match-high seven goals, but a late Pirate surge resulted in a narrow 22-21 defeat by the Whitman College women's lacrosse team to Whitworth in Northwest Conference play on Wednesday evening at the Whitman Athletic Complex.

Neither team could shake the other in the fourth quarter which came down to the final possession. The Bucs scored four of the final five goals, including one on their final possession to break a 21-21 tie with 23 seconds to play. The Blues had one final crack at an equalizer, but Magnuson's shot was deflected by Whitworth goalie Sage Fosnock to preserve the lead and the win.

Sophia Maroulis posted 13 saves in goal for the undermanned Blues (2-5, 1-3 NWC).

The opening period was absolutely a see-saw affair. Neither team led by more than two goals as Magnuson scored the final goal of the period with 2:18 to play and put Whitman ahead 7-5. Whitman led early on back-to-back goals from Daigle, but the Bucs rallied to tie the score at 5-5 and force a Whitman timeout. The Blues held Whitworth scoreless for the final 3:08 to take the two-goal lead into the second period.

The Blues took control in the second quarter. Magnuson scored 15 seconds into the period and Daigle added another to put their team up 9-5. Both scored again to push the lead to five goals with 9:07 to play until halftime. Kylee Walker (4 goals) scored a pair of goals inside the final two minutes to keep the Bucs within striking distance as the teams headed to the break with Whitman up 13-8.

Whitworth responded with five unanswered goals to start the third quarter before Izzy Eggerling scored to stem the tide. Abby Hahn scored the last two goals of the run as the Bucs tied the score at 13-13 with 8:12 to play. The Blues were limited to only one goal in the period allowing the Pirates to take a 15-14 lead into the fourth.

The final quarter featured another see-saw 15 minutes of action. Madeleine Sherry scored back-to-back goals to give Whitman an 18-16 lead inside of 10 minutes to play, but Whitworth responded to tie the game with 7:36 remaining. The Blues again went up by two with 4:55 on the clock after goals from Daigle and Amelia Leopold, but the offense went cold as Whitworth rallied and claimed the win.

The Blues are back in action this weekend with back-to-back NWC matches. Whitman hosts Pacific on Saturday, April 9 and Willamette on Sunday, April 10.
