POCATELLO, Idaho - Don't the score deceive you. The Whitman College men's tennis team put up an excellent fight but dropped four three-set singles matches en route to a 7-0 loss over Division II Colorado Mesa University on Sunday morning.
The doubles point came down to the No. 1 court where CMU's William Leschig and Henry Scheck edged the Whitman pair of
Cameron Yang and
Lucas Huang 6-4. The Blues had gotten to the point after
Braeden Thomas and
Gunnar Woller squared matters with their 7-5 win at the three.
After the Mavericks clinched the doubles point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts, the Blues (0-3) looked prime to take a solid lead early in singles play. Yang, Huang and
Braeden Thomas all held once-set leads in first, second and third singles, respectively.
The leads did not hold however. Yang was the first to fall after losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 before CMU came within one win of the sweep after a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win by William Leschig over Huang. The match clincher came at the three when Diogo Manzano needed a second-set tiebreaker win to beat Thomas 3-6, 7-6 (0), 6-3.
With the result in the books,
Gunnar Woller closed the competition with a solid effort on the No. 6 court, rallying from a set down but falling to Shawn Springer 2-6, 7-5, 2-10.
The Blues play their home opener next weekend when they welcome Lewis-Clark State on Saturday, Feb. 10.
