WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Madeleine Sherry led all scorers with seven goals to lift the Whitman College women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 home-opening win over Corban (Ore.) in the opening game of the Whit Classic on Saturday at Hayner Field.
Prior to the game, the Blues (2-0) recognized with a moment of silence the passing of Robby Bill, CTUIR community mentor and coach.
Teagan Huff and Olivia Banuelos both chipped in three goals with Gracie Maulik scooping up a game-high four groundballs. Korin Wheaton earned the start in goal and posted six saves. Renn Novak entered the game in the second half and registered five saves.
Naomi Rauch and Sydney Davis led the Warriors with three goals each, and Payton Nuse posted 10 saves in a full match of action in goal.
It was a seesaw affair through the first quarter and into the second. Davis scored to tie the game but the Blues slowly began to distance themselves. Sherry scored to put the Blues up by two with just over 10 minutes to play until halftime, then scored mere seconds before the half ended to give her team an 11-8 lead at the break.Â
In a low scoring second half, Whitman's defense was on full display as it pulled away for the win.
Whitman concludes the Classic on Sunday with a non-conference matchup against Lewis & Clark. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m. following the Whitworth vs. Corban game.
