Hernandez, Hostetler Pitch Blues To Sweep of Lewis & Clark

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - With the Whitman College baseball team in the home stretch of Northwest Conference play, the Blues did its part to secure the top spot in the league standings with a doubleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark on Saturday at Borleske Stadium. Whitman won the opener 7-5 and the nightcap 3-1.

Game 1
Sam Meiszkowski-Lapping (2 H, 2 R, 4 RBI) provided the fireworks for the Blues (23-13, 14-6 NWC) in the opener, belting a three-run homer in the seventh that proved to be the difference in the game. With the Blues holding a tenuous 4-2 lead, Jack Bickerton and Brandon Ting both reached base to open the seventh inning. Meiszkowski-Lapping then gave his team some breathing room when he clubbed his three-run shot off Pio reliever Nate Kerr.

The rountripper proved to be vital as Jakob Ghammachi belted a three-run homer of his own to return the deficit to two runs. Peterson, who started the inning in relief of Julien Hernandez, recovered to stymie the Pio bats the rest of the way, retiring four of the next five batters including back-to-back strikeouts in the ninth to seal the win and record the save.

Hernandez (6-1) delivered a solid outing in picking up the win, pitching a strong seven complete innings while allowing two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Brett Pierson gave up four runs on five hits in four and one-third innings for the loss.

Will Heron led the Pios with three hits, one run and one RBI who opened the scoring and led 1-0 through three and one-half innings. The Blues immediately responded as Nate Korahais tripled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to help put his team up 3-1.

Heron drove home a run in the fifth, but Haen Otte (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) provided another Whitman response with an RBI triple to retain the two-run lead.

Game 2
Jack Hostetler pitched a beauty in the nightcap to help complete the doubleheader sweep and effectively clinch a postseason berth for Whitman. He struck out a team season high 14 hitters in eight complete innings while allowing only one run on seven hits.

The Blues provided the necessary run support, scoring in the second and fourth innings for the two-run win. Bickerton posted three hits and scored a run and Garrett Runyan crushed a two-run homer in the fourth which proved to be the difference in the game.

Ghammachi and Brandon Gonzaga led the Pios at the plate, both posting two hits with Gonzaga scoring a run.

Owen Eisen was more than serviceable for Lewis & Clark, tossing seven complete innings and giving up the three runs but was tagged with the loss. Wyatt Adams pitched the ninth inning for the Blues and picked up the save.
The Blues will look to put a stranglehold on the top seed and a regular season title with a series-finale win on Sunday. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m. which will take place following a special senior day ceremony.
