Cross Country Teams Both Place Fifth At NWC Championship

TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College cross country teams battled tough conditions at the Northwest Conference Championship held in Tacoma, Washington. With cold, rainy, and wet weather setting the scene, the men's 8K and women's 6K races unfolded on a challenging course.

"In a very muddy and rainy course I was proud of the efforts from everyone on the team," said head coach Scott Shields. "Not to mention it was an incredibly challenging day for the teams. Woken up by four different faults fire alarms in the hotel starting at 11:45 pm and last one at 5:45 am. Through all the adversity Jack McManus was All Conference in 12th. With the men in 5th. Ella Harrington had the best race overall. 4th place and 1st team all conference. Women's team also had their highest team  finish since 2019."

The Blues women's team was paced by Ella Harrington, who delivered one of the day's standout performances by finishing fourth overall with a time of 22:48.8. Her effort set the tone for the team, which earned a respectable fifth-place finish in the team standings.

On the men's side, Jack McManus led the Blues with a strong 12th-place finish running the race in 26:17.2, helping the men's squad also secure fifth place in a highly competitive field.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, Whitman's teams ran with determination and resilience, showcasing their depth and competitiveness in the conference championship setting.

These performances mark a solid conclusion to the season's key race as the Blues now set their sights on the NCAA West Regional set for Saturday, Nov. 15 in Claremont, Calif.
