WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Whitman College women's tennis turned its home courts into a proving ground Saturday, rolling to a pair of dominant wins over Willamette and College of Idaho at the Whitman Tennis Courts.
Whitman opened the day by cruising past Willamette 6–1 in Northwest Conference play, taking control early with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Blues' depth shone in singles, as they swept courts two through five in straight sets to lock up the conference result. Julia Longpre and Jules Thompson delivered a key doubles win at No. 2, 6–4, while Michelle Deng and Leah Lovato rolled 6–3 at No. 3 to put Whitman firmly in front.Â
In singles, standout Nana Vang led the way with a 6–3, 6–1 victory on the top court, backed by emphatic straight-set wins from Longpre, Bailey Bell, Gloria Lau and Natalie Cruz. Willamette's lone point came at No. 6 singles, where the Bearcats edged past Deng in straight sets.​
In the nightcap, Whitman showed no signs of slowing down, blanking College of Idaho 7–0 to close a perfect day.Â
The Blues mixed consistency and aggression in doubles, earning a 6–1 win from Gloria Lau and Bailey Bell at No. 3 before the top duo of Vang and Renata Rosell clinched the doubles point 6–1 at No. 1.Â
After College of Idaho snuck out a 6–4 win at No. 2 doubles, Whitman answered with a singles sweep, taking all six courts behind disciplined baseline play and steady serving. Vang set the tone again at No. 1, leading 6–3, 2–0 before her opponent retired, while Rosell, Bell, Lau and Lovato all closed out straight-set wins. Cruz capped the shutout with one of the day's grittiest efforts, rallying from a first-set tiebreak loss to win 6–7 (5–7), 6–2, 10–5 at No. 5 singles.
Whitman closes out a busy weekend on Sunday against Puget Sound. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
