Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away To Beat Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Whitman College women's lacrosse team used a blistering second-half surge and a career day from Sarah Hawkins to power past Lewis & Clark 18-10 in Northwest Conference women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.

Hawkins stuffed the stat sheet with six goals and nine points, adding three assists, seven draw controls and five ground balls as the Blues pulled away after leading just 7-5 at halftime. Ellie Milesi and Emily Odegaard each added four goals, with Milesi handing out three assists and Odegaard finishing 4-for-4 on free-position attempts to anchor a balanced Whitman attack.

With the win, Whitman improves to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in NWC play, handing the Pioneers (10-5, 5-1 NWC) their first conference loss and pulling even with them in the league standings.

Lewis & Clark erased an early 5-2 deficit and tied the game 5-5 midway through the second quarter, but Whitman answered with a critical two-goal burst before the break on tallies from Serafin Miller and Odegaard to restore a 7-5 cushion. Miller finished with three goals, giving Whitman four different players with at least a hat trick.

The Blues seized control out of halftime, opening the third quarter on a 3-1 run capped by Milesi's goal with 7:47 left in the period to make it 9-6. After the Pioneers twice converted man-up opportunities to close within 9-8, Hawkins and the Whitman offense responded again, sparking a game-closing 9-2 run that turned a tight contest into a comfortable road win.

Whitman's offense clicked at a high rate all afternoon, firing 36 shots to Lewis & Clark's 19 and putting 29 attempts on goal. The Blues also dominated the draw circle 23-17, with Hawkins and Milesi combining to give Whitman repeated extra possessions.
Lola McConaghy provided the exclamation point in the fourth quarter, scoring all three of her goals in the final frame as Whitman outscored the Pioneers 9-2 over the last 15 minutes. Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky also chipped in two goals, including the game's opening tally and a key third-quarter strike that pushed the lead back to two at 10-8.

Joy Olson-Uderitz quietly keyed Whitman's transition and defensive work, finishing with a team-high five caused turnovers and four ground balls while adding an assist.

In goal, Renn Novak and Kenzie Cain split time, with Novak making five first-half saves and Cain stopping five shots in the second half as the Blues limited Lewis & Clark to just five goals after the break.

Lewis & Clark was led by Ala Cross and Sage Swegle with four goals apiece, while Finley Allen and Kate Meinhard each scored twice.

Whitman now returns home for its final conference games, first against Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, April 25 at 1:00 p.m.
