Women's Tennis Claims Share of NWC Regular Season Crown

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitman College women's tennis team clinched at least a share of its fourth straight Northwest Conference regular season title with a 6-1 win over Lewis & Clark College on Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Tennis Courts.

Whitman, now 14-5 overall and 12-0 in NWC play, rolled through doubles and secured the match early in singles to hand the Pioneers (9-7, 7-5 NWC) the road defeat. The Blues won two of three doubles matches, then captured five of six singles courts, all in straight sets.

In singles, Nana Vang led the way on the top court with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Susanna Anand, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 victory from Sascha Wells over Charlotte Makoni at No. 2. Julia Longpre added a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3 against Maya Curry, and Bailey Bell matched her teammates with a 6-2, 6-2 result over Anna English on court four.

At No. 5, Gloria Lau cruised past Madi Vianzon 6-1, 6-0, while Lewis & Clark's lone point came at No. 6, where Alex Mignogna topped Leah Lovato 6-2, 6-3.

Whitman set the tone in doubles, with Bell and Jules Thompson striking first at No. 3 in a 6-1 win over Makoni and Vianzon. Vang and Renata Rosell followed with a 6-1 victory on the top court against Anand and Emma Loucks to secure the doubles point, before Mignogna and Curry edged Lau and Wells 6-4 at No. 2 for the Pioneers.

The Blues will look to wrap up the title outright next weekend when they close conference play on the road at Willamette and Puget Sound.
