Women's Lacrosse Tops Lewis & Clark In NWC Semifinal

NEWBERG, Ore. – Behind a record-setting night from Sarah Hawkins, the Whitman College women's lacrosse team powered past Lewis & Clark College 18-13 in Friday's Northwest Conference Tournament semifinal at the Austin Sports Complex, sending the Blues to their second straight conference title game.

Hawkins was unstoppable, rolling up game highs of four goals and five assists for a nine-point outing that fueled a Whitman attack which never let up after seizing a 4-3 lead late in the first quarter. The Blues (12-6) advance to face Willamette on Sunday, May 3, with the winner earning the NWC's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Whitman spread the scoring around, finishing with seven different goal scorers and a 34–20 edge in shots. Lindsey Pasena‑Littlesky and Emily Odegaard each netted four and three goals, respectively, while Molly Labhart and Serafin Miller chipped in two apiece and Lola McConaghy and Ellie Milesi added two and one. Milesi matched Hawkins as a playmaker with a five-assist performance of her own.

The Blues set the tone early when Pasena‑Littlesky opened the scoring less than two minutes in, and back‑to‑back tallies from Labhart and Odegaard pushed Whitman in front 3-1. After Lewis & Clark rallied to tie it at 3-3, Odegaard's free-position goal with 6:16 left in the first quarter gave Whitman the lead for good at 4-3.

Whitman delivered its first big surge in the second quarter, using a 4-1 run to build an 8-4 cushion. Hawkins and McConaghy scored just 30 seconds apart to start the frame, Hawkins added a man-up finish, and McConaghy converted a free-position chance as the Blues repeatedly capitalized on Pioneer fouls. Labhart's man-up free-position strike with 10 seconds left sent Whitman into halftime up 9-6.

The Blues blew the game open coming out of the break. Milesi and Odegaard scored woman-up on consecutive possessions, both set up by Hawkins, before Pasena‑Littlesky buried two more feeds from Hawkins to make it 13-7 midway through the third. Lewis & Clark clawed back within 13-12 on a late-quarter push, but Hawkins' finish off a Milesi assist with 35 seconds remaining stemmed the tide and restored a two-goal margin heading to the fourth.

Whitman slammed the door in the final period, outscoring the Pioneers 4-1 over the last 15 minutes. Pasena‑Littlesky's fourth goal, followed by another Hawkins strike and a Miller brace, stretched the lead to 18-12 before Lewis & Clark added a late tally. The Blues also owned a 17-14 advantage in ground balls and went 4-for-5 on free-position attempts, underscoring an efficient, composed effort in all phases.

Lewis & Clark (11-7) was led by Aviana Gonzales' six goals and one assist, and Sage Swegle's three goals and one assist. Whitman goalie Renn Novak earned the win in net, making three saves while directing a defense that forced 23 Pioneer turnovers.

Sunday's championship game is set for 1:00 p.m.
