Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. - Goals from five different players falls in the 'good day' category for Whitman College's women's lacrosse team, but unfortunately the other side of that ledger also picked up a mark Friday afternoon with the Missionaries' 23-7 loss to host Whittier College in non-conference at the Poets' Memorial Stadium.
The Whitties (1-3) answered a quick one-goal deficit after the first minute with consecutive goals from
Nina Henelsmith and
Anna Melville to take the lead, but Whittier (4-3) bounced back with seven unanswered scores before Whitman's
Lindsay Schwartz could end the streak at the 16:40 mark with her 14th of the season.
The rest of the game would be one step forward, a couple steps back for the Whitties.
Maddie Florer scored,
off an assist from Schwartz, but Whittier answered with three straight. A few minutes later
Bea Sheffer would add a goal for Whitman, but the Poets countered with two. Then Florer would score again, but two more Poets shots would find the back of the net afterward.
Schwartz's 15th of the year came in the second half with 21:51 to play but that would be the last time the scoreboard would change in favor of the Missionaries.
Whitman's shooting percentage was also a 'good day' mark as it scored seven times from 10 shots that made it on goal. But the Poets owned the possession and shots advantage, rifling 36 shots, 30 of which were on goal. They also earned a 27-5 edge in draw controls, figures that clearly reflected each team's goals totals.
Starting goalkeeper
Kate Whittingham finished with seven saves in Whitman's loss while Poets starter Madison Topping earned the win making three stops in her 40 minutes of action in the cage.
The Missionaries' three-game non-conference swing around Los Angeles continues Saturday with a visit to Pomona-Pitzer College for a 4 p.m. contest. The trip concludes Monday evening at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges with a 7 p.m. match-up.
