DuPONT, Wash. Whitman's men's golf team repeated its opening-day performance at the PLU Collegiate Open, maintaining its hold on 11th place in finishing with a 57-over par 633 (315-318) Monday at The Home Course. Willamette University captured team honors (289-288—577, +1) at the event hosted by Pacific Lutheran University on the 6,853-yard, par 72 layout.
Eric Wasserman (75-80—155, +11) and
Tobias Zabel (79-80—159, +15) cracked the top 50 for Whitman, finishing in ties for 33rd and 46th place, respectively. The individual medalist at the Open was University of Puget Sound's Mac Turner who carded a pair of 68s for a two-day score of 8-under 136.
The Blues'
Luc Birchfield (82-79—161, +17) gained ground Monday, moving up into a tie for 54th after trimming three strokes from Sunday's round.
Teammate
Mario Santos-Davidson (86-79—165, +21) was the biggest Day 2 mover for Whitman, slashing seven strokes between his Sunday to Monday rounds to climb up into a tie for 63rd place.
Charlie Schneider (84-85—169, +25) nearly matched his single-day scores, while
Will Selman (79-92—171, +27) finished with some bumps and bruises Monday after a stellar opening round.
Next up for the Blues is the Whitworth Invitational on October 1-2, played at the Kalispel Golf & Country Club in Spokane, Washington.
