SPOKANE, Wash. -
Madeleine Sherry scored a match-high seven goals,
Erin Magnuson added five more and a match-high four groundballs and the Whitman College women's lacrosse team kicked off Northwest Conference play with a 20-8 win over Linfield.
The match had originally been scheduled as a home contest at Whitman (2-1, 1-0), but due to unplayable conditions, the match was moved to the Whitworth Pine Bowl on the Whitworth University campus.
Korin Wheaton earned the win in goal, posting five saves in a full 60 minutes of action.
Maizri Chandler led the Wildcats with three goals and two groundballs.
Despite the dominant win, it was Linfield who got off to the fast start. Chandler and a pair of others scored three unanswered goals in the first two minutes to take the early lead. Whitman responded with a 4-0 run after back-to-back goals from Gracie Maulik and Sherrie. The Wildcats hung in there as the Blues took only a three-goal lead into the second quarter.
Whitman all but put the game away in the second quarter. Wheaton and the defense blanked the Wildcats while the offense put another eight goals in the back of the net. Maulik netted two of the first three, and Magnuson chipped in consecutive goals later in the period as the Blues led 16-5 at the break.
The second half featured very little offense by either side, but Whitman made sure of the win with its lockdown defense.
The Blues take on Pacific on Sunday in a match also played at the Pine Bowl. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
