Madeleine Sherry led all scorers with eight goals,
Olivia Banuelos chipped in four more and the Whitman College women's lacrosse team kicked off the season with an impressive 21-7 win at Eastern Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Community Stadium.
Renn Novak and Korin Wheaton split time in goal for the Blues (1-0) with Wheaton earning the start.
Gracie Maulik and Teagan Huff both added three goals as the Blues set the tone with 13 goals in the first quarter. Jade McCoy led the Mounties (0-2) with three goals and Saydee Hetrick added two goals and two assists.
The Blues saw four different players score when netting the first four goals of the game. Banuelos capped the early run with a free position goal just over three minutes into the game. McCoy scored two early goals for the Mounties to keep them in the game, but Maulik and Sherry both found the back of the net to put their team up 8-3 with 7:21 to play.
Wheaton and Whitman shut down EOU for the remainder of the period as Sherry and Huff both scored twice to put the Blues up 10 heading to the second quarter.
The Blues padded their lead in the second quarter and cruised to the victory in a low-scoring second half.
Whitman will have a couple weeks off before hosting the Whit Classic in the first lacrosse games to be played on James Hayner Field. The Blues will play Corban on Saturday, March 2 and Lewis & Clark the following day.
