WALLA WALLA, Wash. -
Madeleine Sherry scored seven goals,
Gracie Maulik added four more and the Whitman College women's lacrosse team evened its league record with a 17-10 win over Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on Sunday at Hayner Field.
Cat Schilli led the Loggers with three goals and Maggie Ott added two more.
After a slow start that saw the Blues net only one goal in the opening quarter, the floodgates opened in the second quarter with 10 Whitman goals. Maulik came alive during the second period with all four of her goals as Whitman took an 11-5 lead into halftime. Sherry also scored a pair in the period to help the Blues reverse the tide.
Though not the offensive explosion seen in the second quarter, the Blues kept it rolling and expanded the lead in the third. It was Sherry's turn to do the scoring, netting four of her team's five goals in the period to push the lead to 16-7 heading to the fourth quarter. Izzy Eggerling scored the other on a free position goal.
Korin Wheaton delivered a fine performance in the fourth quarter as the Blues held on to their sizable lead and cruised to the win.
Renn Novak and Wheaton split time in goal. Novak posted three saves in her first half with Wheaton logging one in the second while giving up only three goals.
Whitman hits the road next weekend for matches against Willamette and Pacific on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
