Women's Lacrosse Tops CLU In Thriller

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Gracie Maulik scored a team-high four goals, Sarah Hawkins added three more and a team-high four assists and the Whitman College women's lacrosse team outlasted Cal Lutheran 16-14 in a non-conference thriller on Tuesday evening.

Lola McConaghy added three goals for the Blues (4-2) who staved off a furious fourth quarter rally from CLU and hung on to record their third straight win.

Both goalies had their hands full with the opposition's offense, but it was Renn Novak who pulled through as the winning goalie. She recorded 14 saves with her Regal counterpart posting 17 saves.

Malina Diaz did the heavy lifting for CLU with a game-high six goals to go along with one assist.

Eliza Daigle, Teagan Huff and Joy Olson-Uderitz were all solid defensively for the Blues, each with three groundballs and Daigle registering two caused turnovers.

For the third straight game, Whitman shut out its opponent in the second quarter but this time the result was still up for debate entering the final quarter. Hawkins capped a 4-0 run to start the period and put her team up by six goals.

Hawkins scored again with 1:58 to play to give the Blues a five-goal lead, but a furious comeback down the stretch whittled the lead to four goals just before time expired.

Whitman will look to make it a clean three-game sweep on its Southern California road trip tomorrow at Chapman. Start time is set for 11:00 a.m.
