Women's Lacrosse Tops Willamette In NWC Semifinals

NEWBERG, Wash. - In a well-balanced offensive effort, the Whitman College women's lacrosse team rallied with an impressive second-half effort to top Willamette in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference Tournament held Friday evening at the Austin Sports Complex.

The Blues will now play in the championship against host and top-seed George Fox who beat Linfield in the first semifinal of the day. The Blues will look to hand the Bruins their first conference loss, regular season or tournament, in nearly a decade when the teams square off on Sunday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m.

Gracie Maulik scored a game-high three goals for the Blues who advanced to their first NWC Tournament championship. Sarah Hawkins added two goals and two assists and Lola McConaghy and Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky also scored a pair of goals.

Lily Bachiochi led the Bearcats with three goals.

Renn Novak posted five saves in goal for Whitman and Olivia Austin, who had her hands full with the Blues attack, recorded 17 saves for Willamette.

Whitman trailed by three at halftime but scored four unanswered to start the third quarter. Maulik scored two in the run and, later, Olivia Banuelos scored to send the game to the fourth quarter knotted at 8-8.

The fourth quarter saw Novak and the Whitman defense nearly pitch a shutout, Willamette scored 40 seconds into the period and never found the back of the net again. Meanwhile, Whitman tied the game and retook the lead, one they would never lose.
