Women's Lacrosse Falls To Carthage In Rainy Affair

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – On a rainy Thursday night at James Hayner Field, the Whitman College women's lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with visiting Carthage College for three quarters before the Firebirds pulled away late in an 11–6 decision.

Carthage struck first with two early goals, but the Blues answered with composure, as Lola McConaghy finished off a feed from Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky and Emily Odegaard buried a free-position shot to send the game to the first break knotted at 2–2. The back-and-forth continued in the second quarter. After Carthage briefly reclaimed the lead, McConaghy converted another free-position chance to make it 3–3, and midfielder Serafin Miller cashed in on a woman-up opportunity in the final two minutes of the half to keep Whitman within 5–4 at the break.

The Blues carried that momentum into the second half, grinding through the worsening rain to generate chances while leaning on a back line that repeatedly turned away Carthage runs. Goalie Renn Novak was central to that effort, recording 12 saves on 29 shots and helping Whitman stay within striking distance despite prolonged Firebird possessions.

Joy Olson-Uderitz and Leah Dingman helped the Blues own a 27–20 advantage in ground balls, repeatedly winning 50–50 plays in the wet conditions and giving Whitman additional possessions. Even as Carthage edged in front 6–4 through three quarters, Whitman's work between the restraining lines and a 17-for-20 performance on clears kept the door open.

Early in the fourth, that resilience paid off. McConaghy struck again just 43 seconds into the frame, tucking home a feed from Odegaard to trim the deficit to 6–5 and bring the Whitman sideline to life. From there, however, Carthage's draw control dominance and depth began to tilt the night. The visitors won 14 draws to Whitman's six and turned that advantage into a 5–1 run over the final 15 minutes, capitalizing on free-position opportunities and a late woman-up chance to close out the game.

The Blues next head to Texas for a trio of games played over next week.
