Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Tops Kalamazoo In OT Thriller

WALLA WALLA, Wash. Sarah Hawkins buried the golden goal 47 seconds into overtime as the Whitman College women's lacrosse team edged Kalamazoo College 13–12 in a wild back-and-forth thriller Saturday afternoon at James Hayner Field.

Hawkins finished with four goals and one assist, including the overtime winner on a woman-up chance and two fourth-quarter strikes that erased a 10–8 deficit and pulled the Blues even at 10–10. She also collected five draw controls as Whitman overcame a 17–10 disadvantage on the circle and a monster 8-goal, 10-point performance from Kalamazoo attacker Ella Spooner.

Down 12–10 with under two minutes to play, Whitman mounted a furious rally. Serafin Miller scored unassisted with 1:32 remaining to make it 12–11, then Emily Odegaard sliced through the defense and scored with eight seconds left, tying the game 12–12 just after a yellow card to Spooner swung momentum back to the hosts. Hawkins then won the opening draw of overtime and capped the comeback with the game-winner, setting off a sideline celebration.

Odegaard nearly ended the game in regulation, whipping around the goal and shooting off one foot, but the ball was saved as time expired.

Miller finished with four goals and three draw controls, while Ellie Milesi added two goals and two assists after striking twice in the opening two minutes to spark a 4–1 Whitman start. Lola McConaghy chipped in two goals, including a crucial tally late in the third quarter that stopped a 5–0 Kalamazoo surge and kept the Blues within striking distance heading to the fourth.

Goalie Renn Novak recorded five saves as Whitman improved to 5–4, backed by a 25–18 edge in shots, a perfect 13–for–13 day on clears, and a 15–3 advantage in ground balls. Kalamazoo, which also got two goals each from Tessa Fuller and Kennedy Hynde, dropped to 2–7 with the loss.

The Blues return to action on Monday, March 23 against Chapman. Start time at Hayner Field is set for 11:00 a.m.
