Women's Lacrosse Edged By George Fox

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The Whitman College women's lacrosse team came close to handing George Fox its first loss to a Northwest Conference opponent, but the Blues fell 16-13 to the Bruins on Sunday at James Hayner Field.

Lola McConaghy scored six goals to lead Whitman (1-2)) who matched up with the Bruins in a scheduled non-conference game between conference teams. Whitman trailed just 8-7 at halftime and cut the deficit to 12-11 in the fourth quarter before George Fox (2-2) pulled away with a decisive run. Emily Odegaard added three goals, while Ellie Milesi contributed two.

George Fox outshot Whitman 36-21 and held a 20-11 advantage on draw controls, but Whitman put 18 of its 21 shots on goal and went 16-for-19 on clears. Renn Novak made 13 saves in 60 minutes for the Blues.

Whitman's best stretch came in the first half, when goals from Serafin Miller, McConaghy and Odegaard helped the Blues erase an early deficit and take a 6-5 lead midway through the second quarter. George Fox answered with a 3-1 run to lead 8-6, but Milesi's late first-half strike pulled Whitman within one at the break.

After McConaghy and Teagan Huff fueled a third-quarter response that trimmed the margin to 11-10 and later 12-11, the Bruins strung together four straight goals spanning the third and early fourth quarters to create separation at 16-11. Odegaard and McConaghy scored the final two goals to bring Whitman within three.

Lana Davis scored eight goals to lead George Fox. Sarah Hawkins recorded four assists for Whitman.
