Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Willamette

SALEM, Ore. – The Whitman College women's lacrosse team used a relentless two-way effort to overpower Willamette University 15-4 in Northwest Conference action Saturday afternoon at Sparks Field. Emily Odegaard and Serafin Miller paced a balanced attack as the Blues moved to 8-7 overall and 4-1 in NWC play.

Odegaard finished with a game-high four goals and two assists, while Miller added three goals and four assists to lead an offense that saw five different Whitman players find the back of the net. Fellow attackers Lola McConaghy and Ellie Milesi each scored four and two goals, respectively, and midfielder Sarah Hawkins chipped in two goals and three assists to round out the top contributors.

Whitman struck early and never trailed, building a 4-1 lead after the first quarter behind two goals from Milesi and a pair from Miller. The Blues pushed the margin to 7-2 by halftime as McConaghy scored twice in the second, including a man-up tally, and Hawkins added an unassisted strike.

Willamette briefly cut the deficit to 8-4 late in the third period, but the Blues slammed the door with a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring the Bearcats 5-0 over the final 15 minutes. Miller opened the frame with an unassisted goal before Odegaard scored three times in the quarter and Hawkins added a man-down goal off a feed from Milesi.

Whitman's defense and ride were just as impressive, holding Willamette to four goals on 23 shots while forcing 23 Bearcat turnovers and limiting the hosts to 13-of-22 on clears. Goalkeeper Renn Novak backstopped the effort with 11 saves while allowing just four goals in a complete-game performance.

The Blues finished with a 32-23 edge in shots and a 20-14 advantage in shots on goal, while also winning the ground-ball battle 19-15. McConaghy, Hawkins and Teagan Huff helped Whitman to an 11-9 edge in draw controls, consistently giving the visitors extra possessions.

Claire Kisielnicki led Willamette with two goals, and Alexandra Miller and Priya Mistry each added one for the Bearcats, who fell to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
